About Kitty

What do your get when you blend the curiosity of an experimental engineer, the insight of a yarn shop employee, and the persistence of a perpetual swatch maker?

A knitting designer who loves to teach and explore!

Kitty’s design philosophy is rooted in experimentation and guided by the Gestalt principles of visual perception. By combining these principles with traditional engineering design techniques, she helps knitters understand how a yarn’s fiber, colors, dye pattern, and stitch choices interact to create truly unique fabrics. Her specialty lies in showcasing variegated yarns and exotic fibers; allowing each project to highlight the beauty and character of the materials themselves.

As a teacher, Kitty empowers students to become independent knitters. Drawing on years of teaching experience in yarn shops and festivals, she has created a portfolio of classes for all skill levels. Her workbook-based instructions provide straightforward steps that make it easy for her students to understand not just how to knit, but why their projects look the way they do. Students learn to visualize a project before they cast on their first stitch.

Kitty has published her step-by-step methodology in Knitting Variegated Yarn – Gestalt Techniques, available on Amazon. This book answers the question, “What can I do with this beautiful variegated skein of yarn?”

Her designs, available on Ravelry, have featured the yarns of American and Canadian indie dyers. Kitty’s work has reached international audiences, from being one of five designers featured in Rhichard Devrieze’s Year of Knitting Dangerously to appearing in the Stitches United 2018 Fashion Show. When she is not designing or teaching, Kitty enjoys life in Washington State with her husband and two sons.
